Looking down on the enemy.
The Battlefield series has become a massive hit on the PC since Battlefield 1942 was released around two years ago. Indeed, to this very day, it is the one game that rivals Counter Strike in popularity at LAN parties. It has also got quite a large supporter base as an online game with thousands of gamers the world over competing at any time. Only weeks ago Electronic Arts released Battlefield 2 on PC and is currently enjoying a massive number of online gamers. Now an all-new game in the series is heading to Playstation 2 (and XBox) with support for up to 24 players online. It certainly looks pretty sharp as well. If you enjoy games like SOCOM: US Navy Seal's or, well, most Tom Clancy games, then this will be for you.

One interesting thing to note is that Electronic Arts recently added the number "2" to the title to ensure gamers don't perceive this as an inferior product to Battlefield 2 on the PC. In reality this game is totally different to both the original and secon game on PC.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat game brings the intensity and excitement of Battlefield 1942 into the modern era with the latest, most technologically advanced vehicles and weapons systems available to man. Focusing on the action-packed, multiplayer style that has earned the franchise critical acclaim, gamers will prepare for all-out war on the modern battlefields of the world.

Tanks ahead!
Players will choose to fight for one of three military superpowers - the Unites States, the Chinese, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition. Armed with the latest modern weaponry, they can then take control of any of the vehicles in game to engage in major conflicts with up to 24 players in some of the largest online battles on the PlayStation 2 console. In fact the online game will include 12 maps to explore and engage combat in.

The graphics look solid.
Featuring large and detailed environments Battlefield: Modern Combat has everything from city streets to remote jungles, spread across some of the globe's most recognized hot spots to engage in battles which could be ripped straight from tomorrow's headlines. Take control of over 30 land, sea, and air vehicles, including tanks, helicopters, hovercraft, fast attack vehicles and fighter jets. The game includes a variety of solider classes including Assault, Sniper, Special Ops, Combat engineer and Combat Support units as well as over 50 state-of-the-art modern weapons and advanced weapon systems, including heat seeking missiles and laser designated bombs.

Tanks are a blast!
Of course this game will include not only online gameplay for up to 24 gamers, but also full in-game community support including, buddy lists, stat tracking, and in-game clan creation. Voiceover communication is supported with USB headset so you will be able to talk to your buddies while playing the game - be it about plans for the weekend or strategies to defeat the opposition!

The American release of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is currently set for October 24th while PAL gamers won't be too far behind with a release set for November 2nd in Australia. My major concern is the number of players online - 24. The PS2 will be pushed to the limits to cope, and unless EA Australia set up some servers here, or somewhere in Asia, the lag to Europe or America may be too large with even 4-player action games struggling at times. Still, here's hoping.
