Firewatch started life as a PC game however Sony and the development team at Campo Santo surprised everyone at E3 this year by announcing the game would also be released on the PS4, and would be a console exclusive. So what's the game about? Well, read on...
In Firewatch you play as Henry, a man who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, itís your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor, a woman named Delilah, is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio ó and is your only contact with the world you've left behind.
Despite the small development team, Firewatch reall looks great.
But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the world, youíll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making interpersonal choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.
Developers Campo Santo aren't a studio many would be familiar with however the company, based in San Francisco, boasts developers who have worked on titles including Mark of the Ninja, Brutal Legend, The Cave, Bioshock II, and The Walking Dead: Season 1. Theres some great titles there and we're hoping this game lives up to the potential.
Inside the Watch Tower.
This can best be described as an adventure game with a mysterious twist as Henry tries to uncover some strange happenings. While he communicatates with Delilah in another watch tower over the radio, he will also encounter other people camping or exploring the wilderness. Indeed Campo Santo have recorded thousands of lines of dialogue for the conversations between characters.
Developed on the Unity Engine Firewatch is an impressive looking game, in particular the lighting and forests which stand out as something quite spectacular. Not only does there appear to be differing times of day, but also dust and haze which gives the world a realistic look to it. It really is amazing to think that many of the visuals in this game are created by three people on the team.
Firewatch is due out in late 2015, or early 2016.
It's fair to say that there are some phenomenal looking indie games coming to the Playstation 4 over the next year or so, and Firewatch is set to be among the best of them. Funnily enough only hours after posting this preview the developers announced that the game will be released on February 9, 2016 so we don't have too much longer to wait to get our hands on this title. Hopefully we'll see more of this game soon, and keep your eyes out as there has been talk of the game getting a Beta prior to release.
